Social media influencers are constantly in the public eye. So, if a creator with 100,000+ followers posts something on social media, people will either praise them or cancel them.
James Charles has been known for getting defensive in the past with tweets, resulting in him getting “cancelled” each time. Up until recently, Charles has managed to stay out of any scandals or internet drama.
However, on August 5th, Charles found himself in hot water when he tweeted the following:
Many people began to speculate that the tweet was in response to Dixie D’Amelio, Charli D’Amelio, and Addison Rae.
On July 30th, Morphe’s official Instagram account announced the launch of their latest collaboration, involving the D’Amelio sisters. Although the D’Amelio sisters have experimented with makeup in the past, they’re not known for wearing it every day — which further hinted at the possibility that Charles’ tweet was towards them.
Similarly, Addison Rae has also been promoting her upcoming makeup line. Rae collaborated with Madeby Collective to created Item Beauty. Since the line is set to launch in a few days, fans also assumed that the tweet may have been directed towards her.
However, Charles set the record straight the following day, when he tweeted out an updated statement. In the statement, Charles’ shut down rumors of the tweet relating back to his friends, and admitted that his initial tweet was towards Alicia Keys.
“A few years ago, she announced that she would no longer wear makeup, so I was bothered by it because many celebrities come into the beauty space as a cash grab without any actual passion and then leave”.
Charles’ also went on to admit that he was immature for indirectly tweeting at someone, and admitted fault for assuming, without researching. Alicia Keys did not release a makeup line, but a skin care line. Although the brand is currently unnamed, it will be available sometime next year, and is also a part of Keys’ collaboration with E.L.F. cosmetics.
Charles’ humorously responded to a Twitter user, who compared his vocals to that of Alicia Keys.
